A Note About
Copyrights:
There is currently a lot of controversy
surrounding this subject and as is usual there are two sides to the story.
Having been on both sides, as a consumer and as a designer, I can empathize
with both views. As a consumer I felt I had paid my money and now the
pattern belonged to me. I resented being told I could make only one quilt
(or five or whatever the number) using the pattern I had purchased.
As a designer I can understand why others
have listed restrictions on the use of their patterns. They have had the
experience of a "producer" purchasing one pattern and mass-producing
quilts from the design, giving neither compensation nor even recognition
to the original designer.
My feeling is that at some point we have to have some
trust in each other. As a designer I have to assume you like my patterns
or you would not have purchased them. I need to assume that if you like
my patterns you want me to continue designing. In order for me to spend
the time, energy and finances to do that, I need to be reasonably compensated.
If you, the quilt maker, distribute my patterns to friends and acquaintances
I am losing sales and I am less financially able to continue designing.
Ultimately it could mean I cannot stay in business. As a quilter, you
have to know that you can use my patterns without a lot of restrictions
on what you do with the resulting quilts. If you make one grandchild a
quilt and another one wants one just like it I don’t feel you should
have to purchase my pattern again. So long as you, the purchaser, are
the one actually making the quilt from my pattern I feel you should make
as many quilts as you like from that pattern.
Producing patterns is a partnership between
the quilter and designer; if we respect each other’s needs we both
win.
